Happy Heralds, IncMISUNDERSTOOD MYSTERIES MADE MANIFEST (CLEAR) by Dr. Fred Wittman VI. THE MYSTERY OF HEAVEN “Stop letting the heart$ of yours& be disturbed! You& are continually committing trust unto The God, continually commit trust unto Me also! In the dwelling of My /Father there are many abodes[of rest at the end of a highway], but if (and it is not true) |it were| not |so|, I would have told you&. I am ojourneying in order to prepare a place for you&. And if (and it may be) I journey /and\ I prepare a place for you&, I am coming again. And for Myself I shall take you& from alongside to[the face of] Myself in order that you& yourselves also be where I Myself am continuously being” (Jn. 14:1-3ATP). INTRODUCTION: What is the human’s best option for Eternity like? Is Heaven for real? Could Jesus tell a lie? What is Heaven really like? The Lord Jesus Christ gave a precious promise to His disciples after the passover celebration in the upper room the night before He was betrayed to be crucified! He spoke of Heaven. To many people Heaven is a mystery. Heaven is a prepared place for a prepared people! But the cost to prepare for Heaven was tremendous! There are five aspects of this mystery to be considered: The Price of Preparation, The Place He’s Preparing, The People Who Will Dwell There, The Presence of Christ, and The Promise Christ Made. A. THE PRICE OF PREPARATION. Before The Lord Jesus Christ could go to prepare a place in Heaven where humans can spend Eternity in Heaven, He had to go to the cross of Calvary (the place of Skull). He had to do this in order to prepare a sinful people to be purified and cleansed from their sins and made holy. Heaven is a Holy Place where only holy and prepared people may enter. In order to prepare the people and prepare the place, The Lord Jesus Christ had to pay a tremendous price involving five horrendous feats. 1. The Lord Jesus Christ had to lay down His Life in behalf of His sheep. He said, “I Myself came in order that they continually have absolute life and |that| they continually have |it| more abundantly. I Am Myself continuously being The Intrinsically Good Shepherd. The Intrinsically Good Shepherd lays down His natural /life[soul] in behalf of the sheep&” (Jn 10:10,11APT). And just who are His sheep? Jesus Himself told the Jews who did not commit trust that He was the Christ and who His sheep are (Jn. 10:24,25). “The sheep& /belonging to Me are continually hearing My /call. And I Myself continually know[from experience] them and they continually follow Me. And I Myself continually give eternal absolute life to them and they shall positively not perish for ever. And not anyone shall snatch them out of My /hand. My /Father, Who has given |them | to Me, is continuously greater than all and not one+ is able to snatch |them | out of My /Father’s /hand. Myself and The Father are continuously being One~ ” (Jn. 10:27-30APT). Jesus indicated two factors that identify His sheep. Firstly, they are continually hearing His call--the words He voices. Secondly, they persist in continually following Him. Webster’s International Dictionary defines the word “follow” as a verb with the following meanings: “to walk after, to attend closely to, to accept as authority: to obey, to understand the thoughts of, to be led by, to engage in as a way of life, to imitate, to keep the mind on, to be guided by.” All of these meanings relate to the action of the sheep belonging to The Lord Jesus Christ. He expects every aspect of persistent following to be evident as identifying factors in the lives of His true sheep. If people are so identified as His sheep, He promised that He will know them from experience. That means He will experience His sheep continually performing these actions and in return He will continually give His sheep eternal absolute life and He Himself will protect them in His mighty hand so that they will never perish nor will they ever be snatched away out of His own Hand nor out of the hand of His Father Who is greater than all. 2. The Lord Jesus Christ had to shed His precious Blood. The sheep of His must be forgiven, perfectly purified and cleansed from sin, and made holy before they could enter that pure and Holy Place. Through His blood The Lord Jesus Christ provided the means of obtaining all of this. The following Scriptures indicate this. “But when Christ emerged alongside High Priest of the imminent beneficially good things by means of the greater and more perfectly complete Tabernacle, not made with hands, that[this] neither by means of 0blood of he-goats and of calves, but by means of His own blood He entered once for all into the Holies, after finding in Himself an eternal ransoming[payment of release price]. For if (and it is true) the blood of bulls and of he-goats and 0ashes$[Num. 19:2-.19] of an heifer by sprinkling the ones having been ceremonially unclean sanctify to the ceremonial purification of the flesh, by how much rather shall the blood of The Christ, Who through 0Eternal Spirit offered Himself unblemished to The God, cleanse the conscience of yours& from dead works in order to continually sacredly serve The absolute Living God?” (Heb. 9:11-14APT). “In Whom we have the redemption[release for ransom paid] through the blood of His, with reference to the forgiveness of the gross stupid errors, according to the wealth$ of the grace of His” (Eph 1:7APT). “And apart from shed blood forgiveness does not come to pass!” (Heb. 9:22APT). “. . . since being aware that you& were not ransomed with corruptible things, |namely| with silver or with gold, out of the futile vanity of your & conduct of life belonging to tradition of 0fathers, but on the contrary with Christ’s 0precious blood, as of An Unblemished and Unspotted Lamb” (1 Pet. 1:18,19APT). “. . . and the blood of Jesus Christ The Son of His keeps on cleansing us [away] from all sin” (1 Jn. 1:7APT). 3. The Lord Jesus Christ had to Agonize on the Cross. Crucifixion is a most excruciating death. Three times The Lord Jesus told His disciples that He is to be crucified (Mt. 20:19; 23:34; 26:2). But even before He was nailed to the cross and lifted up to suffer death, He was brutally beaten with a Roman scourge on His back until all the skin was torn off. He was crowned with thorns and beaten upon His head with a reed to force the thorns into his skull. Then He was nailed hands and feet to the cross and lifted up to linger at the point of death for six hours. Not only did He agonize physically at the hands of cruel humans, but also spiritually as He The Holy One who knew no sin was made sin for us and agonized under the rod of The Holy God suffering the torment of separation from and affliction by The God Whom He pleased every moment of His life and even in the hours of death on the cross. 4. The Lord Jesus Christ had to Taste Death for every one. The wages for the [objective genitive]Sin is death (Rom. 6:23APT). John called it “the second death” (Rev.20:14). “And the sea gave the dead ones, / |namely| the ones\ in it. And the death and the hell[Háh-ihdays, temporary abode for departed human spirits] gave the dead ones, /|namely| the ones\ in them. And they were judged each one according to the works of theirs. And the death and the hell[Háh-ihdays, temporary abode for departed human spirits] were cast into the Lake of the Fire. This is the second //death\: /the Lake of the Fire\” (Rev. 20:13,14APT). In his Treatise to Hebrews Paul indicated the fact that He did and why The Lord Jesus did taste death in behalf of everyone. “But with reference to the short |time| being made something inferior compared with 0angels, we are seeing Jesus, because of the suffering of the death standing crowned[with the victor’s crown] in glory[majestic radiant splendor] and with highly respected precious value, so that by God’s grace He taste of 0death in behalf of everyone[both + and ~]” (Heb. 2:9). 5. The Lord Jesus Christ had to Endure God’s Fiery Wrath to pay the penalty for Sin. The penalty for Sin must be meted out to unrepentant, faithless, unregenerated sinners to suffer eternally in the Lake of Fire with the devil and his angels (Mt. 25:41), whom they purposely or unsuspectingly served. Jesus told the religious leaders of Israel, “Amen, Amen, I am saying to you&, ‘Everyone who continually commits the sin is continually a bondslave of the sin. . . . You & yourselves are continually of 0father the devil and the lusts [earnest desires] of your& /father you & are determinedly willing to constantly do” (Jn. 8:44APT). What an indictment upon those leaders who claimed to believe in The God and thought they were worshipping Him while all the time they were bondslaves to Sin and serving Satan, the devil! How many people today are in the same predicament! They claim to belong to The Christ, to believe in Him or to follow Him, but are still bondslaves to Sin and Satan. The apostle Paul wrote to the Romans, “You& are aware, are you& not? That to whom you& yield yourselves bondslaves unto obedience, you& are bondslaves to whom you & are continually obeying, either[restrictive, one of two; this first naturally] to [objective genitive]Sin unto death, or to [objective genitive]obedience unto righteousness?” (Rom. 6:16APT). He also wrote to the Corinthians about those who proclaim another gospel of a different kind which contains a Jesus of the same kind but a spirit of a different kind (2 Cor. 11:4APT). Then after a parenthical digression, He referred back to those false proclaimers, “For the such like ones |are|: false apostles, deceitful workers, transfigurers[alterers of outer appearance] of themselves into apostles of Christ! And not a marvelous~ thing! For /Satan himself is repeatedly transfiguring [altering outer appearance] himself into an angel of light. Therefore no great thing! If (and it is true) the domestic[deacon, attendant to needs] servants of his also are being transfigured[alter outer appearance] as domestic [deacon, attendant needs] servants of righteousness, whose /end shall be according to their /works!” (2 Cor. 11:13,14APT). What is that end of those who are enslaved and serve as bondslaves to Sin and Satan? Paul stated that the wages of Sin is death (Rom. 6:23). In that same verse of Scripture he contrasted the wages of Sin with the grace-gift of The God. The grace-gift is eternal absolute life. By contrast with the result of receiving the grace-gift, the implication is that the wages is eternal death. John clarified the concept of death as the penalty and payment for Sin to be “the second death,” which is eternal existance enduring The God’s wrath being “tortured daytime and nighttime for ever and ever in the Lake of Fire and Brimstone” (Rev. 20:10APT). Brimstone is sulphur which gives off a black dark smoke producing darkness. John later states, “This is the second death: the Lake of Fire” (Rev. 20:14APT). Since the penalty and punishment for Sin is to endure The God’s fiery wrath tormented in darkness, in order to save us from paying that penalty, The Lord Jesus Christ must become our substitute and endure that penalty for us. A substitute only stands in for a short time. This He did in those three hours of darkness on Calvary’s cross as The God in fierce anger brought His passionate fiery wrath upon Sin on The Lord Jesus Christ, The Passover Lamb of God during those last three hours. So in order to prepare people for this perfect Holy Place that The Lord Jesus Christ is preparing He had to pay this tremendous price involving laying down His life, shedding His precious blood, agonizing on Calvary’s cross, tasting death for everyone, and enduring The God’s fiery wrath. Now consider the Place that He is preparing. B. THE PLACE HE’S PREPARING (Rev. 21:10-27): The Lord Jesus Christ is preparing a luxurious city with many abodes for His Church, which comprises every regenerated human being from Pentecost to the day He comes in the air to resurrect all the ones who died and unite them in the clouds with those still living to meet The Lord in the air. This coming again of The Lord Jesus in the air for “His own” is often called the ‘rapture’ by many redeemed people because it will be ultimate ecstasy for all who have anticipated that moment. The Lord Jesus told His disciples, “In the dwelling of My /Father there are many abodes[of rest at the end of. a highway], but if (and it is not true) |it were| not |so|, I would have told you &. I am journeying in order to prepare a place for you&. And if (and it may be) I journey /and\ I prepare a place for you&, I am coming again. And for Myself I shall take you& from alongside to[the face of] Myself in order that you& yourselves also be where I Myself am continuously being” (Jn. 14:2,3APT). This luxurious place will be a great city which is described by four profound aspects. 1. PRODIGIOUS (ENORMOUS) (Jn. 14:2 cf. Rev. 21:2,16) - Jesus is preparing a place containing many dwelling places of rest at the end of the highway to Heaven. That place is a city called The Holy City, New Jerusalem in the Book called Revelation by the Saint John, the Theologian (Rev. 21:2APT). This ‘place’ is an enormous city with extraordinary dimensions. “And the city perpetually lies foursquare and the length of it / \ [/is so long\] as long as the breadth. And he measured the city with the measuring reed for twelve thousand stadia [1s=c. 1 Roman mile = 607.5' i.e. 1,380.7 statute mile, / \ [/twelve\]. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal” (Rev. 21:16APT). The City is gigantic with an overall size of approximately 1,850,203,125 cubic miles. It is enormous! 2. PEERLESS The Holy City is without equal in size, beauty, capacity, cost, and building material. a. The SIZE The Holy City is four square. The base is 1325 miles long by 1325 miles wide, which amounts to 1,755,658 square miles. To get a concept of the size of The Holy City, the equivalent of length and breadth is the distance from New York City to Miami, Florida and from Dover, Delaware to Omaha, Nebraska. Then the height of it is equal to its length or breadth, 1325 miles. Thus, as stated above, the aggregate size is approximately 1,850,203,125 cubic miles. Some conjecture The Holy City to be a pyramid, while most consider the shape to be a cube due to the description of it which John gives. There is really no indication in Scripture that it may be pyramidical in shape. It is a Heavenly City, therefore symmetrical. The pyramid is an ancient structure found predominantly in Egypt and was built by heathen who worshipped idols for the purpose of burying their dead. Some attribute origin to the tower at Babel which the ancient children of men built intended to reach into Heaven. The ziggurats which were discovered in the ancient near East were temples built in the form of pyramids for the purpose of worshipping unholy gods. The Holy City is being built by The Lord Jesus Christ for a luxurious eternal dwelling for the holy living ones who possess eternal absolute life. Such contrast would seem to weigh heavily toward the favor of The Holy City being built in the form of a cube. b. The WALLS The walls are 216 feet high made of pure, clear-as-crystal gold with twelve layers of foundations. Each layer of foundation is made of a particular clear-as-crystal, transparent, precious stone of a different color measuring 18 feet high. The bottom foundation layer is of jasper, “brilliantly clear and sparkling as crystal (v. 11). The second foundation layer is of rich blue sapphire. The third foundation layer is of pale blue or pale gray chalcedony. The fourth foundation layer is of rich green emerald. The fifth foundation layer is of reddish-brown or reddish orange sardonyx layered with white. The sixth foundation layer is of blood red carnelian. The seventh foundation layer is of olive green chrysolite. The eighth foundation layer is of sea green beryl. The ninth foundation layer is of bright golden yellow topaz. The tenth foundation layer is of chrysoprase, a variety of apple green chalcedony. The eleventh foundation layer is of purple blue jacinth. And the twelth foundation layer is of violet amethyst. Since the city is illuminated by the majestic radiant splendor of the glory of The God, the rays of illumination shine through all these glorious transparent layers emitting a glowing sight of grandeur. On each of the foundation layers a name of the twelve apostles of The Lamb is inscribed (v. 14). c. The GATES There are twelve gateways to The City, three on each of its four sides. Over each gateway is inscribed one of the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel (v. 12). Each of the twelve gates are made of one huge pearl apiece (v. 21). The gateways are positively not shut at daytime and there is no night there (v.25). Therefore the gates are never shut. d. The STREET The broad street of The Holy City is made of refined, clear gold as transparent or translucent glass (v. 21e,f). Along the street from place to place in the middle nature path is a wood of trees of life producing twelve fruits month by month and the foilage was used for the healing care of the nations (22:1,2). e. The RIVER Proceeding out of the throne of The God and The Lamb is a clean river of water of absolute life, shining as crystal. Along the river here and there a wood of trees of life producing twelve fruits and foilage just as along the street in the middle nature path mentioned above (22:1,2). 3. PEACEFUL - It is a place where all is peace and ‘no more’ prevails. For there shall be ‘no more’ curse,‘no more’ night,‘no more’ death, ‘no more’ war, ‘no more’ sorrow, ‘no more’ pain, ‘no more’ screaming, ‘no more’ tears, ‘no more’ sin, ‘no more’ lying, and ‘no more’ of anything that defiles (v. 4). And it can be said that there will be no more depression, no more murmuring, no more discontentment. And no more dissension. Because “The God Himself shall be with [in the midst of] them” (v.3d), there shall be perfect peace continually, persistently prevailing. The throne of The God and The Lamb will be moved from the Third Heaven where The God now dwells to This Peacful and Perfect City, New Jerusalem (Rev. 22:3b). 4. PERFECT - There the perfect conditions that prevailed on Earth (Gen. 1:31) before Adam sinned will be recreated to remain permanent forever. As noted above the Tree of Life, from which Adam and Eve were barred from partaking, shall be restored and available to eat freely of its twelve fruits throughout the year, a different fruit every month. Neither Sun, nor stars, nor Moon are needed to produce light because the glory of The God constantly illuminates The Holy City and no sin nor evil can abide that glory. It is the ultimately perfect place. C. THE PEOPLE (Rev. 21:7,8,27; 3:12,21; 1 Jn. 3:1-3) - John, the beloved disciple and theologian indicated eight times in the Book of Revelation that only those who overcome or get victory over the world and sin shall have a part in the Holy City. The eighth mention of overcoming or conquering is conclusive. “The continually overcoming one shall inherit all~ things. And I shall be 0God to him and he himself shall be //\ son to Me. But to /the cowardly ones and to faithless ones and to sinners and to abominating ones and to murderers and to sexually immoral ones and to sorcerers[dealers in black magic and drugs] and to idolaters and to all the lying ones, the part of theirs |shall be| in the lake, |namely| the^ one continuously burning with fire and brimstone, which is /the\ second / /\death. . . . And every kind of defiling~ thing and one doing abomination and falsehood shall positively not enter into it, except the ones standing written in The Lamb’s /Book[Scroll] of The Absolute Life” (Rev, 21:7,8,27APT). The only people that shall enter and dwell forever in The Holy City are those that meet two requirements. They are prepared overcomers and purified children of The God. 1. Prepared Overcomers (Rev. 3:12,21); In John’s record of the letters that The Lord Jesus Christ addressed to His Churches in chapters two and three of Revelation, seven promises are stated. Two of these promises particularly pertain to the Holy City. “The one continually overcoming, him shall I make a pillar in the Holy Place[of the temple] of The God of Mine. And he shall positively not exit without[out away from] anymore. And I shall write upon him the name of The God of Mine and the name of the city of The God of Mine, The New Jerusalem which is descending out of /Heaven [away]from The God of Mine and the new name /of Mine[Byzantine Manuscripts divided]. . . . The one continually overcoming! I shall give to him to sit down with Me in My /throne, even as I Myself overcame and I sat down with My /Father on His /throne” (Rev. 3:12,21APT). Note: in order to have this promise fulfilled for yourself, it is necessary to continually or persistently overcome. The present tense of the Greek verb νικάω “to conquer, overcome, or be victorious” requires continual or persistent action. 2. Purified Children of The God (1 Jn. 3:1-3; Heb. 12:14). The Second requirement for those to enter The Holy City is that they be holy and purified sons of God. In His first Epistle the apostle John wrote to his children in the faith. “Behold, what manner of love[sovereign preference over self and others] The Father has permanently given to us, that we be titled, 0Children[relationship emphasis] of God. Because of this, the world is continually not knowing /you&\ because it did not know[from experience] Him. O beloved ones, now we are 0children[relationship emphasis] of God. And it is not yet displayed what we shall be, but we are aware that, if (and it may be) He be displayed, we shall be like ones to Him, because we for ourselves shall behold Him according as He is. And everyone who[article as pronoun] continually has this /hope upon Him repeatedly purifies himself according as That+ One is pure” (1 Jn.3:1-3APT). If indeed we have this hope of The Lord Jesus Christ returning to take us to be with Him in Heaven because we are regenerated children of the God, then we will repeatedly purify ourselves even as He is pure. How can we do this? John already told his readers in the first chapter. “If (and it may be) we confess our /sins, He is One+ continuously 0Faithful+ and 0Just+ so that He forgive the sins to us and He cleanse us away from all unrighteousness” (1 Jn. 1:9APT). The word confess is the translation of the Greek word oμολγέω (hohmoh-lohgéh0), which literally means “to say the same as.” Therefore we must say exactly what The God says about every sinful action. It does not avail to say, “Lord forgive me.” The Scripture verse does not say, “If we ask for forgiveness, He will forgive us.” But, “If we confess our sins, He is One continually Faithful and Just to forgive us and to cleanse us.” We must not ask for forgiveness, but rather name the sin. State the sinful act and admit you have sinned. Say something like this, “O Lord I have sinned. I have told a lie” (if that was the sin, or state what you did wrong or failed to do--your sin of commission or omission). “I have yielded to temptation to look at evil. I have failed to turn the television dial when sinful deeds were shown. I have failed to read The Scriptures today. I have failed to pray this morning. State exactly how you sinned.” Then thank him for forgiveness and cleansing.) Say, “Thank You, Lord, for Your forgiveness. Thank You for cleansing me. And the next time I am tempted, prompt me by Your Holy Spirit to yield my members to You and to resist the temptation and not repeat this sin. In the name of The Lord Jesus Christ I pray. Amen!” It is absolutely essential that we keep short accounts with The God and in this way purify ourselves. Paul wrote to the Hebrews, “Pursue peace with all |people|! and the sanctification[a holy relationship separated unto The God], apart from which not one+ shall behold The Lord!” (Heb. 12:14ATP). Paul made it clear that the personal sanctification (AV uses “holiness” which is the result of sanctification) is absolutely necessary in order to behold The Lord. If we are to pursue sanctification or holiness, it is to be obtained by us through confession of sin and forsaking it, with the intention not to do it again, but rather to be pure and ready for The Lord Jesus Christ to return in the air at any moment. D. THE PRESENCE of Christ (Jn. 14:3; 1 Thes. 4:16,17; Rev. 21:3; 22:4) Jesus promised, “If I journey, . . . I am coming again. And for Myself I shall take you from alongside to Myself in order that you yourselves also be where I Myself am continuously being” (Jn. 14:3APT). He desires our personal presence in company with Him. So He promises His personal presence with us in the Holy City which He is personally preparing for us. Is not that a mystery that He should so desire our company? The apostle Paul encouraged the Thessalonians about His personal presence with and for us when He comes again. “Because The Lord Himself shall descend from Heaven with a shouted directive, with 0archangel’s call, and with God’s trumpet. And the dead ones in Christ shall be resurrected first. Thereupon we ourselves, the ones absolutely living, |namely| the ones being left around, at the same time shall be snatched away together with them in 0shaped clouds for the purpose of a meeting up with The Lord in 0air. And so we shall be together with 0Lord all the time” (1 Thes.4:16,17APT). The apostle John recorded what he heard in his heavenly vision of The Holy City. “And I heard a great call out of the Heaven saying, Lo! the Tabernacle of The God |is| with [in midst of] the humans. And He shall tabernacle with [in midst of] them and they themselves shall be His people[same race and language]. And The God Himself shall be with[in midst of] them / \ /God of theirs\!” (Rev. 21:3APT). “And the throne of The God and of The Lamb shall be in it. And His /bondslaves shall sacredly serve Him. And they shall behold His /face. And His /name |shall be| upon their foreheads” (Rev. 22:3b-4APT). How wonderful it will be to see Him face to face with newly glorified bodies just like His glorified body and enjoy His personal bodily presence throughout the rest of time and Eternity. Yes it is a misunderstood mystery E. THE PROMISE of Christ (Jn. 14:1-3) - The Lord Jesus Christ gave this precious promise the same night He was betrayed to be crucified. “Stop letting the heart$ of yours& be disturbed! You& are continually committing trust unto The God, continually commit trust unto Me also! In the dwelling of My /Father there are many abodes[of rest at the end of a highway], but if (and it is not true) |it were| not |so|, I would have told you&. I am 0journeying in order to prepare a place for you&. And if (and it may be) I journey /and\ I prepare a place for you&, I am coming again. And for Myself I shall take you& from alongside to[the face of] Myself in order that you& yourselves also be where I Myself am continuously being” (Jn. 14:1-3ATP). The Lord Jesus Christ went away just as He promised! And just as surely as He went away, He will come again to take all those He calls His own to Heaven to be with Himself forevermore! He will Keep His promise! He cannot lie? But the question is, Will you be in that number? Are you one of His own? You can be sure right now! It may not be long before The Lord Jesus Christ comes again! It behooves each one of us to be ready because He said He will come as a thief in the night and when He is least expected! CONCLUSION: Are you ready? Only those who are ready and obediently trust in Christ persistently and follow Him as disciples of The Lord Jesus Christ will enter Heaven with Him when He returns in the air for His own! ‘‘Believe’’ means, to commit trust. Scriptural faith is an active, abiding, personal trust in The God of the Scriptures and in Jesus Christ, Whom He has sent, which faith results in action, transaction, transformation, relationship, tribulation, and ultimate Triumph. The action is immediate, persistent, exact, obedience. The transaction is an exchange of your old life to Christ for His new Life. The transformation that takes place is that you become a new creature in Christ Jesus. The relationship that results is one in which you are born into God’s family as a son. You will have trials and tribulation in the world, but you won't have to go it alone. The Lord Jesus Christ will be with you through all that transpires in your new life. And in the end you will triumph with Christ and reign with Him forever.
