Hebrews 13:8; 1:10-12

“Jesus Christ, The Same yesterday and today and for /ever! . . . And,[Ps. 102:25-27] O Lord, You$ Yourself, with respect to beginning, laid 0foundation with reference to the Earth. And the Heavens are 0works of the hands of Yours$. They shall perish, but You$ are continuously remaining constant[throughout]. And they all shall decay[be made obsolete] as an outer garment. And You$ shall fold them up as if a wrap[what is cast around] and they shall be changed, but You$ Yourself are continuously The Same+. And the years of yours shall not fail[pass away]” (Heb. 13:8; 1:10-12).

Introduction: In The Word of The God there are over 500 names, titles, and designations for The God. Many of these pertain to The Lord Jesus Christ as well as to The Father. Let us focus our attention on one of these found in a very familiar verse of Scripture which describes The Lord Jesus Christ by a special Old Testament name for The God, Jehovah, which occurs in The Old Testament at least twenty times, eleven times in Isaiah alone.

          This name of The God is the translation of an idiomatic construction with two Hebrew pronouns in close proximity without a verb for emphatic expression. The Hebrew expression is attáw - a primitive pronoun of the second person singular - thou and thee, combined with - a primitive pronoun of the third person singular - He. Together they form Attáw Hû, a Hebrew name which virtually becomes another name for Jehovah and translates as ‘‘The Same.’’ Some times simply translated as ‘‘He’’; other times not translated at all. This peculiar emphatic idiom signifies ‘‘The Self-existent One Who never changes’’ (Ps. 102:27). In contrast with the changeableness of everything created is The Unchangeable God, Who is inevitably The Same.

   I. Who? The Person - Old Testament Jehovah - The LORD .

A. The Creator (Heb. 1:10 cf. Ps. 102:25-27; 2 Kings 19:15; Neh. 9:6; Is. 37:16; 43:13; 48:12,13; Jer. 14:22; Neh. 9:6) -- before day existed (Isa. 43:13).

         God The Father and Jesus Christ The Son (Gen. 1:1; Jn. 1:1-3).

B. The First and The Last (Isa. 41:4; 44:6; 48:12; 43:10 cf. Rev. 1:11,17; 2:8; 22:13).

  II. When? His Perpetuity (Heb. 13:8)

A. Yesterday (Ps. 90:4 cf. 2 Pet. 3:8): These men throughout The Old Testament recognized Jehovah as The Same.

         1. Moses (Deut. 32:39,40) in 1598 B.C.;

At the close of his life The LORD spoke to Moses and emphasized that vengeance and recompense belonged to Him, that He would judge His people and said, “I am The Same.”

         2. David (2 Sam. 7:28 cf. 1 Chron. 17:26) in c. 1034 B.C.;

When David told Nathan the prophet of his intention to build a house for the ark of God, Nathan encouraged him to do so. Then The LORD of Hosts sent him back to David to relate that his son would build a house for The God in David’s stead, but The LORD promised David that his throne and kingdom will be established forever. David went and prayed before The LORD, naming Him, The Same, Whose words and promises are true.

         3. Jehoshaphat (2 Chron. 20:6,7) in 900 B.C.;

When it was told to King Jehoshaphat that a great multitude of Moabites, Ammonites, and other nations were marching against him to battle, he proclaimed a fast to seek The LORD. He asked The LORD, “Art not Thou The Same, The God in heaven? and rulest not Thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen [nations]?”

         4. Hezekiah (2 Kings 19:15 cf. 2 Chron. 20:6; Isa. 37:16) in c. 712 B.C.;

When King Hezekiah received a letter from the armies of Assyria, He speard it before The LORD in the Temple and opened his prayer by saying, “Thou The Same art The God, even Thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the Earth. Thou Hast made Heaven and Earth. . . . Save Thou us out of the hand of Sennacharib.” And He did!

         5. Isaiah (Isa. 41:4; 43:10-14,25; 48:12; 51:9-13) in c. 710 B.C.;

At this time Jehovah, The LORD refers to Himself as The Same. This passage begins with that familiar Scripture that John The Baptizer quoted in chapter 40. “I, The LORD, The First and with The Last am The Same.” The passage containing this Messianic prophecy continues through chapters 43 and on through chapter 65. In speaking to Israel, He said, “Ye are my witnesses, saith The LORD, and My servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am The Same. Before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. I, even I, am The LORD; and beside me there is no savior. I have declared, and have saved, and I have showed, when there was no strange god among you; therefore ye are my witnesses, saith The LORD, that I am God. Yea, before the day was created I am The Same. And there is none that can deliver out of my hand. I will work, and who shall hinder it? Thus saith The LORD, your Redeemer, The Holy One of Israel. . .” (43:10-14). Again, “I am The Same, I am The First, I also am The Last” (48:12).

         6. Jeremiah (Jer. 14:22) in 626 B.C.;

Forty years before the destruction of Jerusalem and the third deportation of Israel to Babylon, he wrote, “Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain? or can the heavens give showers? Art not Thou The Same, O LORD, our God? Therefore we will wait upon thee: for Thou hast made all these things” (Jer. 14:22).

         7. Nehemiah (Neh. 9:6) in Autumn 445 B. C. - 24 Tishri (Sept.- Oct.).

On this Day of Separation from moral impurity with fasting in sackclothes and ashes, the Levites stood on the stairs and called for all to stand up and bless and praise The LORD, your God. “Thou art The Same, Thou alone Jehovah. Thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and Thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee” (Neh. 9:6).

B. Today (Heb. 3:7,15 cf. Ps. 95:8). He is exactly The Same today as He ever was since the Beginning.

C. Forever (2 Sam. 7:28,29; 1 Chron. 17:12,14, 26; 2 Chron. 20:6,7; Isa. 41:4; 48:12; 52:6,7 cf. Rev. 1:18; 22:5).

III. Why Important? The Performance.

He performed Creation (Heb. 1:10; Isa. 37:16:48:12,13);

         Protection (De. 32:38-40 );

         Faithfully--always keeps His Word (2 Sam. 7:28);

         Rules over all kingdoms (2 Chron. 20:6);

    Salvation--The only: Savior, God, Redeemer, Forgiver of sins (Isa. 43:10-14,25);

         Comfort (Isa. 51:12,13);

         Control of the weather (Jer. 15:22);

Help out of danger and Preservation of life even under adverse conditions (Neh. 9:6-15,16-37).

Conclusion: “Jesus Christ, The Same yesterday and today and for /ever!”(Heb. 13:8APT). The Same meets all the needs of those who seek Him and His Kingdom of righteousness first. After teaching a lesson on Stewardship and concluding by telling his disciples to take no thought of the essentials of life, food, clothing, and water (all the things after which the Gentiles, He emphatically commanded, “For your& /Heavenly /Father is aware that you& are needing all these~ things individually. But persistently seek& first the Kingdom of The God and His /righteousness! And all these~ things shall be added to you&” (Mt. 6:33APT). He is our only Helper out of danger and Preserver of Life. How seriously are you willing to respond in commitment to Him Who is The Same, Who can be all you ever need once you commit ALL you are and ALL you have to Him?
